The College Dropout, the debut album of Kanye West, was released on February 10th, 2004. Kanye, who was previously solely regarded as a producer, tried to make a splash with Roc-A-Fella Records to begin his hip-hop career. Although finding minimal success doing such in the early stages, the project was eventually released, and to much praise at that. Dubbed as one of the greatest hip-hop albums, The College Dropout has left one of the greatest marks in the genre. The 21-song project brings the likes of many major names in the genre and compiles them to construct the beginning of arguably the greatest trilogy of albums ever released.
Background
Kanye’s producer career started in the nineties, where he produced for many big names including GLC, Ludacris, Janet Jackson, just to name a few. His big breakthrough was his work on Jay-Z’s 2001 The Blueprint, which was heavily successful. After being a part of the Go-Getters (a nineties Chicago rap group), Kanye desired to rap his own solo album. Starting in the early 2000s, Kanye began recording and producing this album, all without a label. No one took the rap album from a producer seriously, hence the lack of a label.
Having to market the project on his own, he went door to door from labels pitching the album over and over until he eventually reached a deal with Roc-A-Fella Records. While everything began to look up for him, Kanye West was in a near-fatal car accident in 2002, which stunted the album. While the label deal was the main issue postponing the album from the initial 2003 release date, the car accident had major implications for Mr. West on this project, so much so, he wrote an entire track about his experiences with the accident and admitted that the project was his medicine.
Production & Recording
Initial recording stages began in 1999, which took place at Record Plant in Los Angeles, California. Production took place in a plethora of places, and at some points would take place even at his own apartment. The headline of production was his notorious Louis Vuitton backpack filled with tapes, as he would bring this bag with him and produce tracks in around fifteen minutes. Although The College Dropout was leaked during this process, the project was heavily altered by Kanye prior to official release. Recording wrapped around December 2003 and the project was finalized throughout the final year prior to release.
Taking heavy inspiration from Lauryn Hill’s, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Kanye brought a vintage hip-hop feel to the project. West masterfully crafted beats in which you follow the rhythm and match the vibes intended on the track. One of the highlights of this vintage feel here is the usage of the choirs, which adds a majestic backing on every track it is included. It is apparent that this is the aspect Kanye mastered, and it is a true testament to Kanye’s creative ambition and artistic vision. From track one to track twenty-one, the listener is never disappointed in the production level, whether it is the instrumentation or the vocals. As the clear highlight of the album, the production on The College Dropout is some of the best ever in the hip-hop genre.
Meaning
One of the strong suits of the entire project is how intimate it seems that Kanye is with the album’s meaning. The College Dropout follows the typical hip-hop themes of prejudice, personal struggles, materialism, and religion. The difference is how these topics are incorporated into each song, as well as the strength of each theme. The skits are wonderfully woven into the album, elaborating on each track surrounding them. The project follows a majority of Kanye’s issues in his life, between the car accident to personal struggles. He also tackles heavy subjects of consumerism and common societal issues, doing such in an excellent manner.
Vocal Performance
The surprise of The College Dropout comes out in Kanye’s performance throughout. Well a lot of the project relies on the features Kanye brought, his rap performance was certainly a highlight. He was heavily doubted prior as a rapper, and his A-game was prevalent on these tracks. Songs like “All Fall Down” and “Jesus Walks” established Kanye’s name up as a great rapper, demonstrating his vocal prowess. Whether it is West’s fast deliveries of his lines or his slower, melodic take on some songs, he establishes his talent. The features he brought with this album also compliment his style perfectly, as he meshes near perfectly with any voice he pairs himself with.
Release
The album was finally released on February 10th of 2004, and was met with high praise. The College Dropout had sold 441,000 copies in its first week, debuting the project at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart. By November 2004, the album had sold nearly 2.3 million copies, and the rest was history. Although the project had been delayed three times, initially August 2003, the project had gained high traction. The College Dropout has sold a total of 4 million copies, and in 2020, the Rolling Stone ranked the album 74th in its “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list.
Conclusion
Through the animosity Kanye had faced, between the constant delay, the doubt of him as a rapper, or his near-fatal car accident, Mr. West cemented his name in the hip-hop genre as a rapper. The project has stood the test of time, and The College Dropout has only grown more popular in the over two decades of its lifespan.
